Color Grading Showreel

When taking their first steps in the world of video production, one of the big mysteries videographers are confronted with is why, when they shoot a scene with a pro camera and good lighting, it comes out nothing remotely like what they see in films or TV series. Many things combine to make a video special, but the technique that most transforms the look and feel is color grading.

Color Grading – what is it exactly?

Color grading is how you enhance or alter the color of an image, whether moving or still. It’s the way in which video producers achieve a visual mood and tone. Color grading used to be referred to as color timing, a manual process used in developing old film.

Back then, color adjustments were made by changing how long film was exposed and playing around with the different developing solutions. While the term color grading refers to the whole process of adjusting the color, the process comprises two principal parts:

Color correction

Adjusting the basic color, white balance, exposure, and contrast to be consistent from frame to frame.

Color grading

Once these corrections have been made, the footage can be color graded to fine tune the colors and create a specific look. At SmartCuts we have video editors who specialize in color grading. They use the best program available on the market to do this, DaVinci Resolve, and can provide a tailor-made look that can serve as a signature look for your videos.
